| Primarily an illustrator of medical books, William Stewart also did painting of southern landscapes. He was born in Airdrie, Scotland and studied at the Glasgow School of Art.
He settled in New Orleans, Louisiana where from 1946, he was a professor at Louisiana State Universtiy School of Medicine. He was active with the New Orleans Art League and the Association of Medical Illustrators (board member). He exhibited with the New Orleans Art League.
