William Collingwood Smith, R.W.S. (1815-1887)

He was born to a father who worked for the Admiralty and was a musician and an amateur artist.  Without formal training in art, though he studied with James Duffield Harding.  At the time, he painted both in oils and watercolors, preferring marine works to landscapes.  This soon changed and he began to paint landscape watercolors almost exclusively.  At the  age of  21, Smith was already exhibiting at the Royal Academy.

In 1843 he became an Associate, and subsequently a Member, of the Society of Painters in Water Colors which later became the Royal Watercolor Society, serving as treasurer for some twenty years, and starting its Art Club.  He also joined the New Society of Painters in Water Colors.
