William Collingwood Smith, R.W.S. (1815-1887)
He was born to a father who worked for the Admiralty and was a musician and an amateur artist. Without formal training in art, though he studied with James Duffield Harding. At the time, he painted both in oils and watercolors, preferring marine works to landscapes. This soon changed and he began to paint landscape watercolors almost exclusively. At the age of 21, Smith was already exhibiting at the Royal Ac (showing 500 of 882 characters). |
