This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Bath, ME on Feb. 25, 1823. Swasey headed a company of fur traders who made their way across the plains to California in 1845. Shortly after arriving, he was a bookkeeper at Sutter's Fort. He then served under General Frémont during the war with Mexico and rose to the rank of captain. Following the war, he was elected secretary to the San Francisco Town Council and served as the last U.S. Marshal for California prior to its admission into the Union. His pictorial map of Yerba Buena (SF) in 1846 was lithographed by the Bosqui Engraving & Printing Company in 1886. The original was destroyed in the fire of 1906. Swasey died at his home at 263 Octavia in San Francisco on Dec. 25, 1896.
