A descendant of German immigrants, William McKendree Snyder studied with George Inness, Albert Bierstadt and William Hunt. He was born in Liberty, Indiana, and lived in Madison and Columbus, Indiana. Snyder fought in the Civil War on the Union side and reportedly survived the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp. Snyder was one of the first to paint the landscape of Brown County, Indiana.
