Born in Latvia, William Sanderson immigrated to the United States at the age of eighteen. He received formal training at the Art Students League in New York as well as the National Academy of Design. Following his studies, Sanderson found work as an Illustrator for publications including "The New Yorker" magazine. He exhibited in New York and held a one-man show sponsored by the Contemporary American Artists Gallery in 1931.
