William Stamms Shackelford in Tennessee in l859 and l860 according to census and Clarksville City Directory. His wife was Sarah Lewis Reed, daughter of missionary Isaac Reed, whose portrait Shackelford painted. He also painted portraits of nieces and nephews; those are in the collection of the Tennessee Colonial Dames.
He was born in Kentucky, ca l8l4, lived at some time in New York. According to Pioneeer Painters of Indiana, by Wilbur D. Peat (19 (showing 500 of 901 characters).
