| | Born in Scotland on March 5, 1846. Sutherland moved to San Francisco as a young man and was apprenticed there to lithographer George Jay. As a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, he painted several ship portraits for other members; the Ghirardelli family were also among his patrons. Most of his landscapes of Marin County and the East Bay were lost in the 1906 earthquake as well as his fortune. He died in Marin County, CA on Jan. 24, 1926. Exh: Mechanics' Inst.
