This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Japanese born, Yuzuru Sugimoto settled in California early in his career, and became known for his modernist paintings including scenes of Yosemite National Park.  He was much influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh in Paris, where he had studied before coming to California.  As a result, in the 1930s, he was working in a post-impressionist style that was not the traditional approach associated with most of the Japanese-American artists of that era.

Sugimoto's artistic career came to an end in 1942, when he was placed in a Japanese relocation camp in Arkansas until 1945.
