Born in Kovno, Russia on May 2, 1899, Zygmund Sazevich was a student at the University of Kazan before moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1923. During the 1930s, he shared a studio in San Francisco with fellow Russian, Eugene Ivanoff.
His art studies were continued at UC Berkeley and the California School of Fine Art where he later was a member of the faculty from 1947-65; he also taught at Mills College in Oakland during 1947-58.
