Artist Biography:
ART BIOGRAPHY
I have been painting ever since I can remember. In fact I painted a mural on my bedroom wall at age three. Unfortunately, according to the spanking I received it wasn’t much appreciated. Actually, for the most part my parents encouraged me. One wonderful summer at age 12 they paid for me to study under marine and landscape impressionist Witney Myron Hubbard. Hubbard, who died in 1964, was for years largely unrecognized except by a considerable following in the Green Port, Long Island area where he lived and painted. His work is only now gaining the wider recognition it deserved. Hubbard had a joyful, painterly style of plein air painting which has been a major influence in my art ever since. After that I painted whenever possible, but, as with most aspiring artists, for most of my years I found myself having to make a living in other ways.
It started with the draft in 1943 and being a S. Sgt. in the Army Combat Engineers for three years. Then, thanks to the GI Bill, I received a BFA in Industrial Design, with Honors, from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  From 1951 to 1963 I had a one half ownership in an industrial design firm. Among our clients were major US companies such as Proctor Silex and Philco, to name just two. During some of those years I also taught at the University of the Arts. Then in 1963 I had, what some might call a mid life crises, and decided I had had enough of desk work. I wanted to work on my other love, boats and being outside. So I sold my one half of the design firm to my partner and my wife and I purchased some property on the Eastern Shore of MD where we started a marina. In 1988, after 25 years developing what became one of the bigger marinas on the Chesapeake Bay, we sold it. By then I was also a professional captain, licensed for unlimited passengers in both sail and power.
But I never stopped painting. I even had a little gallery in the corner of our marina which did very well. Now with years of retirement from the marina I have been able to paint almost full time and I love it.  Over the many years of painting I have a huge number of paintings in various private collections with many repeat patrons. I also have had one man shows at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and at Heron Point in Chestertown, MD, at numerous banks and other institutions. For several years we had our own gallery in Red Rock, PA. As for shows, I can point to many show firsts and seconds in painting, both oil and watercolor, as well as some in sculpture.
