Artist Biography: John grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and began his career in painting, working in the photorealist style. In the mid-nineteen seventies John worked with thin oil glazes on large canvases and ended up becoming sick from the solvents. In looking for a healthier medium of expression, he chose watercolor. Now that oil paints and the solvents are a lot less toxic, he use oil for plein air and larger studio works but is best known for his watercolor paintings.
In 1992, inspired from a trip to Japan, John was working on a series of large Japanese Koi. While working on these, he realized that he should paint what he truly knew and loved and since then has focused on painting the landscape of California.
Along with landscapes, John does other series usually nature oriented paintings. An example would be a recent series of large watercolor paintings of beach rocks. These paintings are his effort to capture the meditative effect one gets while looking at the rocks at the beach.
