Artist Biography:
Erik Holland was born in Detroit in 1958. He started drawing and painting at an early age.  Growing up in Chicago, he developed a love of architecture...but standing on El platforms where he could look out over the city, he fell in love with the big Midwestern sky as well.  He looked at maps and dreamed of the empty spaces...the Great Basin of the West, the Yukon territory up north, and the Amazon jungle down south. At the time of this writing, he has been lucky enough to have lived in the wilderness of Alaska and in Reno at present, at the western edge of the Great Basin. In his thirties, Holland began painting murals in Fairbanks Alaska.  After a move to Reno, NV in 1999, Holland began to have a solo show every year.  in 2010, Holland began to have shows in musuems.

Holland is also very politically active, has run for office three times, and draws political cartoons. His first cartoon book was published with a grant from the Nevada Arts Council in 2012.  Holland loves to have themed shows. Some recurring themes are "One Square Mile", in which Holland takes a close look at the area close to his home in the Riverside Artist's lofts in downtown Reno. He'd like to expand this concept to other cities.  Another favorite is Peaked Again in Nevada, in which Holland chooses ten new peaks a year to spotlight. He has had four "America's Outback" shows as well, celebrating the Great Basin area in which he lives.

Artist Statement:

I just love to paint!  I feel more ground when I paint, I just feel happy!  I  am heavily influenced by Edward Hopper, the Hudson River school of painters, Maynard Dixon, and have studied with Jean LeGassick of Silver City, NV.  I love both plein air painting, then taking home the inspiration and refining it in the studio.  Every now and then, I will do a "historical painting"  One of my favorite paintings of all time is my Cesar Chavez Long March.  I am almost finished with "Singing in the Cottonfield", my Juneteenth painting. There is  no better feeling for me, than when I am in the field, the weather is ok, and the paint is flowing!
