Ann Sophia Towne Darrah had a long career as an artist that included the creation of pastel portraits, landscapes, and marine views. Born in Philadelphia, Sophia Towne Darrah was the daughter of John Towne. Her father endowed the Towne Scientific School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1876, and was also a prominent collector of modern art, and so young Sophia grew up surrounded by paintings.
