Dowden attended the Carnegie Institute of Technologie (now Carnegie Mellon University), graduating with a degree in art in 1930. Her desire to illustrate books brought her to New York City, where she was offered a teaching job at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, taking classes at the Art Students League and a mural atelier at the Beaux Arts Institute.
