| | Born in Piedmont, Italy on May 13, 1832. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Tortore worked there for several years. Upon moving to California about 1870, he became a lay Jesuit brother and was teacher of drawing and painting at Santa Clara College from 1878-1904. Among his pupils were Ernest de Saisset and Andrew Putnam Hill. Tortore specialized in religious art until his demise in Santa Clara on April 29, 1906.
