Bernadette Hughes is one of the rare breed of artists, those that are self-taught. Her sense of tone, color, form, line, and light is innate. Her portraits manage to capture the elusive qualities that make an individual unique. Her work is forthright, realistic, yet often augmented with a dash of romance. Hughes also paints with equal intensity landscapes and still lifes of the Southwest.
