"I enter the studio and the dance begins, the dance in my mind
between my subject matter and the formal principles and elements of
design. As I plan what to paint I consider how the rectangle of canvas
might be divided, i.e. by diagonals, by the square-in, or into the
reciprocal. Sometimes a certain color I want to use dictates the
subject matter. Or, the idea for a painting may start with an object
that catches my interest. My thoughts go back and forth in a
