This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born near New Bedford, MA April 3, 1824 of Mayflower stock. At 15 Taber shipped out on a whaler. After many years at sea, he became master of his own vessel. When gold was discovered in California, Captain Taber sailed around Cape Horn in August 1848. For a time he was engaged in the transportation of troops for the U.S. government. Taber was later the captain of a ferry boat which plied the waters between San Francisco and Sacramento. In the latter he was a contractor who built the first frame building in that city. In 1850 he returned to the New Bedford and continued whaling until 1862. A versatile man, as well as an amateur painter, he also wrote two books on geology and one of poetry. The brother of Isaiah West Taber, he died in Wakefield, MA on Jan. 29, 1911. In: Crocker Museum; CHS.
