Traveling the West Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle, he is a successful painter of moody seascapes and historical ports. He carries a sketch book, recorder, and camera and in his studio in Chico, California, paints the scenes on canvas.
He goes to great pains to be historically accurate about sailing vessels and uses a computer to recreate models. In 1997 and 1997, he won the Rudolph J Schaefer Award from the Mystic Maritime Gallery in Mystic, Connecticut.
