This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Edward Martin Taber was born on Staten Island, NY July 21, 1863.  He showed a great gift for painting at an early age but suffered from ill health, tuberculosis, throughout his short life.  He studied only a few months with Abbott Henderson Thayer and left New York around 1889 for health reasons to live in the mountains of Stowe, Vermont.

Taber is considered a leading 19th century Vermont landscape painter, but his paintings are extremely scarce due to his short life and his inability to paint many works during his prolonged illness.

He is noted for his mountain landscapes and his preference for winter subjects. During his shortened life, he was a member of the Society of American Artists and his paintings were exhibited there regularly.

His works were collected by leading business personalities of the day including Andrew Carnegie and Henry Holt.  Taber lived in Stowe until the last few months of his life, when he moved to Washington, CT and died there on September 9, 1896.

Posthumously, his painting, Mount Mansfield in Winter, was exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900 and Pan American Exposition in 1901, and is now owned by the New York Metropolitan Museum. Taber was a nature lover who kept a journal of his life, letters and poetry while living in Stowe. The journal was published in 1913 with illustrations of some of his artwork by the Houghton Mifflin Company as Stowe, Notes, Letters and Verses.  It was highly received, with some critics comparing Taber's writings to that of Henry David Thoreau.
