| A painter and craftswoman, Ethel Townsend was born in Staten Island, New York. She studied at the Metropolitan Museum of Art School and the Art Students League and with Henry Bayley Snell and Orlando Rouland.
Townsend was a member of the Woman's Art Club of New York and the Art Club of the Oranges in her resident state of New Jersey. In 1895, 1898, and 1902, she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and other exhibition venues included the Boston Art Club in 1907 and 1908, and the Art Institute of Chicago, 1908.
In the 1920s and 1930s, she was employed by the Gorham Silver Company. |
