| Painter, teacher. Born in San Francisco on March 22, 1862 of French parents. About 1866 Tanière moved with his family to Dijon, France. The family was trapped there during the Franco-Prussian War. Returning to his native city in 1877, he studied art at the School of Design. He returned to France in 1885 to study at Académie Julian for six years. Upon his return to San Francisco, he established a studio. He became active in the local art scene and had just begun to blossom as an artist when he died in a bicycle accident on March 28, 1895. His rare works include still lifes and landscapes.
