| Son of painter Oscar Thalinger, Frederic Thalinger became a sculptor working in the mediums of welded copper, soap, stone, welded metal and sculpted clay. He studied at Washington University in St. Louis and at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as briefly with Grant Wood. At the University of Cincinnati, he studied ceramics with Harold Nash.
He settled in St. Louis, Missouri.
