George Addison (Mrs.) Throop is primarily known as Deborah Goldsmith
One of the pioneering female itinerant artists in America, she painted family portraits in the early 19th century and signed her works "D. Goldsmith." They likely would have been attributed to a man had her granddaughter not saved her letters and paints.
She grew up in North Brookfield, New York, the youngest of many children, and was left to support aging parents. She taught herself portrait painting and traveled to earn money, staying with families until her work was completed.
