Horst Trave attended Graphic Art College, Berlin, 1937-1939; Royal Academy, Stockholm, 1940; California School of Fine Arts, 1947-1949; and California College of Arts and Crafts, B.A. Ed 1949, M.F.A. 1951. Trave was an art instructor in San Francisco, 1954-1978 and Santa Rosa Junior College, 1988-1990.
