Yvan Theys was a Belgian painter, sculptor and collage artist. Born in the Flemish village of Mark, he was a graduate of the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc. In 1959, he became professor in the Institut Saint-Luc and remained a teacher there until 1996 .

Emotionally charged, his artwork is about human destiny and confrontation between men and women. Theys started his career as a painter in the 1960s, developing a close personal art of the new abstraction outside the currents of Pop Art. Painting abstract figurative subjects with thickly applied paint, he developed a figurative expressionist style with elements of geometric abstraction. His work has been likened to that of artists associated with Cobra and Pointillism. In the 1980s, his encounter with the world of dance and choreographer Pina Bausch gave a boost to his paintings with the addition of dynamic and monumental figures.

In the 1990s, he began three-dimensional works with acute angle tension and made from cardboard, plaster and wood, and from 1994, he worked in bronze, sometimes adding splashes of color to individualize each sculpture.

In 1963, he began his first solo exhibitions, and received, a year later, the "First mention Young Belgian Painters Award".

Among other awards, he received:
    ?    1987 Ministry of Culture of Flemish Community for lifetime achievement;
