This biography from the Archives of AskART:
James "Son" Thomas was a blues musician and folk art sculptor. He was raised by his grandmother who called him "son" as an endearment.

James Thomas worked as a grave digger and assisted with embalming in a funeral home. This work led him to a series of sculptures with skulls and coffins.

Thomas' sculptures were included in the exhibition "Black Folk Art" at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and "Passionate Visions of the American South" at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
