A native of Germany, he lived in New Zealand and the United States, gaining recognition as a portrait and landscape painter wherever he resided.
Tensfeld (also Tensfield or Tensfeldt) received his art training in Germany and seems to have arrived in New Zealand circa 1865/1866. Several excerpts from local publications indicate that he worked as an artist and participated in events as an active member of his community:
