Of Dutch and Scottish descent from ancestors who settled in Rhodesia in
the 1890s, John Tolmay is a self-trained sculptor in realist style who
has spent much of his career in Africa trying to conserve
wildlife. However, having become discouraged, he is now settled
in Montana where his close friend is western artist Loren Entz.
Tolmay was tutored during his childhood by a "raw, bush-wise
African". Of this experience he said: "There could have
