The following information was submitted in May of 2006 by Terry Carpenter:

"John Toole (1815-1860) was born in Dublin, Ireland, and taken to Charlottesville, Virginia, as a young boy.  Many documents relating to him and his art survive.  From them it is possible to reconstruct both his private and his professional life and to see how a primitive painter could blossom into a highly competent artist.  Toole began painting at the age of seventeen, and soon after h (showing 500 of 1363 characters).
