A writer and illustrator, John Thomason also did watercolor painting, often illustrating his own writing and those of others with his pen and ink sketches. Over sixty articles by him appeared in magazines including "The New Yorker", "Saturday Evening Post" "National Geographic" and "Scribners". He also wrote eight books, many about war and his travels. Among his books are "Fix Bayonets!" (1927); "Jeb Stuart" (1930) and "Salt Winds and Gobi Dust" (1934).
