| Born in Queens County, Ireland, Launt Thompson came to the U.S. at age 14 with his widowed mother. He found work as a handy man in Albany, New York, and then for 9 years was a studio boy for the sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer. He developed superior skill in modeling and carving. At age 24, he opened a studio in New York City at 51 West Tenth Street and became known for his medallions and portrait busts. He also did equestrian statue, and in the 1867 Paris Exposition, entered a colossal statue of Na (showing 500 of 19901 characters). |
