This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A full-time employee of the Delphi Monon Railroad during most of his adulthood, Leroy Trobaugh painted landscapes and some still lifes during his free time and traveled widely for subject matter on his free railroad passes in the United States.  His style ranged from Brown County American Impressionist to Regionalist, and he used vibrant, explosive colors.

Although painting was his passion and he produced nearly five-hundred canvases, he never considered himself a professional artist. He was very modest and frequently gave away his paintings.

He was born in Delphi, Indiana, and in 1901, enrolled for one year in the Art Students League in New York, studying with Kenyon Cox, Charles Curran, H. Siddons Mowbray, Benjamin West Clinedinst, and Frederick Dielman.  For unknown reasons, he left the art world of New York and returned to Delphi where he remained the rest of his life, working as the station agent as well as painting prolifically.

His westward travels began in 1926, and from these he developed an interest in Indian pottery that was reflected in many of his still life paintings.  In the early 1930s, he went to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee and shortly after to the East Coast where he did marine paintings.  Many of his landscape depictions were close to home in Carroll and Brown Counties, but he ranged farther including to the Grand Canyon, the East Coast and the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.
