A painter and craftsperson active in Northern California, Lillian Tobey was born in Chicago, Illinois to Irish parents and moved to San Francisco about 1900. Her studio at 414 Pine Street was next door to Maynard Dixon and William Keith, and she, described as a "diminutive, fiery Irish girl" who painted and worked in metal and decorative leather, was married to Dixon married in 1905 at the home of well-known writer, Charles Lummis in Los Angeles.
