Lodewijk Toeput is also known with first names of Lodewyk, Lodewyck and
Ludovic and also with full name of Ludovic Pozzoserrato, called il Pozzoserrato. He was born
in the Belgian city of Antwerpen in 1550.
Toeput moved from Belgium to Italy and met Karel van Mander (1548-1606) in Venice.
Toeput painted and drew portraits, landscapes, historical
allegories of the Bible, mythological themes from the Methamorphoses and The Tower of Babel. He was good friends with the German
artist Hans von Aachen (1552-1615),who painted a portrait of him in 1585 The portrait is in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum – Austria) - Joos de Momper was a
pupil of Lodewyck Toeput.
Lodewijk Toeput died in his workshop in Treviso (Italy) in
1605.
Work is in museums in Brussels, St.Peterburg, New York, Hanover and London.
