| | Born in China in June 1857. Mary came to California in 1868 as an orphan and was adopted by missionaries named McGladery. She married Joseph Tape and settled in San Francisco where in 1885 she sought justice from the local board of education for barring her children from attending white schools. As a result, the Chinese Primary School was established for Chinese children. Mrs. Tape is California’s earliest known Chinese-American woman artist. Her rare works include still lifes and landscapes. As well as a painter, she was also a telegrapher and photographer. She died in Berkeley, CA on Oct. 9, 1934. Exh: Mechanics' Inst.
