Biography from Anthony's Fine Art:
Mary Teasdel was born in Salt Lake City in 1863. An important and active impressionist painter, she was one of the first Utah women to study in Paris.  She died in Los Angeles in 1937.

Teasdel attended the University of Deseret (1882–86) and studied under Ottinger.  After her graduation with high honors, she furthered her studies with J. T. Harwood. From 1895 to 1896 she studied at the Art Students League and at National Academy of Design in New York from 1895 to 1897.  She studied in France for three years where William Benjamin-Constant, Jules Simon, and James Whistler were her instructors.

Her work was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1899—the first woman and second Utahn to have this honor.  She also exhibited at the International French Exhibition.

Following Teasdel’s return to Utah in 1902 she was appointed to the governing board of the Utah Art Institute.  She instructed in Salt Lake City schools and in her own studio.

She lived in Monterey, California briefly before moving to Los Angeles in 1920. Teasdel produced many impressionistic studies of Utah and of the Monterey Peninsula. She also painted many oils, watercolors, pastels, portraits and floral still lifes.  Her painting, Mother and Child (1920), typifies her interest in domestic scenes and soft impressionistic colors.

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
A painter, Mary Teasdel was born in Salt Lake City, UT on Nov. 6, 1863.  Raised in affluence, she was the daughter of a wealthy merchant.  She studied at the University of Utah and with J. T. Harwood.

She continued in New York City at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design under George DeForest Brush and spent three years in Paris studying under Simon, Constant, and Whistler.

White in France, she exhibited at the Paris Salon and the International French Expo as well as in Vienna and Berlin.

After her return to her native city in 1903, she became an art teacher in the public schools and served as president of the Utah Art Institute.  Teasdel was held in great esteem before leaving Utah. A spinster, she settled in Los Angeles in 1921 and remained until her death on April 11, 1937.

Her oeuvre includes portraits, floral still lifes, and landscapes in oil and watercolor.
