A plein-air oil painter and exponents of representational painting in Ireland, Norman Teeling is especially noted for his views of Venice such as afternoon sun on the Grand Canal, or the watery light of a rain-splattered St Mark's Square.  He also paints other cityscapes as well as interiors and landscapes.

His harmonious use of colour and tones in these contrasting outdoor scenes is repeated in his quiet interiors, in which his lush pigment and thick brushwork combine to create a sense of stillness.

Born in Dublin, Teeling trained at the National College of Art and Design* under Maurice MacGonigal PPRHA (1900–1979) and John Kelly RHA (1932–2006), after which he spent twelve years teaching fine art at various Dublin colleges.

In the late 1980s, he left teaching for the Animation* industry, where he enjoyed a successful career as a background artist on numerous films and TV series, eventually producing his own animated feature films.

He has also produced a number of newspaper illustrations and an Irish cartoon strip, as well as set designs for the Abbey, Gate and Tivoli Theatres in Dublin.

As an Irish landscape artist, Teeling is noted for his romantic Impressionist* style of plein-air* painting.  He now works largely in oils, although he has also produced a number of watercolours.  His oeuvre encompasses all the genres including: landscapes (eg. Venice, Florida, Ireland), still-life interiors, portraiture, genre-scenes and history painting.  In the 1990s he completed a monumental series of 10 works commemorating The 1916 Rising, Easter week, April 24 to April 30, 1916.  This suite of oils was acquired by An Post in 1998 and is now on permanent display in the General Post Office, Dublin.

He is represented in several public and private collections, and his works are regularly on display at The Green Gallery (St. Stephen's Green, Dublin); Gallery 4 in Sandymount, Dublin; The Warren Gallery (Skibbereen, Co. Cork); Greenacres Gallery (Wexford); Killarney Art Gallery (Co. Kerry); Lilly Fine Art & Print Gallery (Slane, Co. Meath); and The Barbara Stanley Gallery in Putney, London.

Teeling's latest projects include the publication of a book on how to improve your landscape art.  Entitled: Norman Teeling Paints The Irish Landscape In Oils, it contains 9 easy-to-follow, step-by-step, practical demonstrations, using over 200 full colour artworks. (160pp).

In addition, Teeling (in collaboration with fellow Irish painters Paul Kelly, Henry McGrane, John Morris and David Nolan) has recently launched Oil Painters of Ireland*, a new artist group which aims to promote the merits of traditional and representational art to the Irish public.  Its latest group show was the outstanding "Venice and Beyond" exhibition, which took place in Wexford at the Greenacres art gallery.
