Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he was a teacher at Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, and exhibited throughout the state including at the Joslyn Memorial Art Museum in Omaha.
He studied at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota, earning M.A. and M.F.A. degrees. In 1972 and 1978, he won Best of Show awards at the Mid-West Biennial exhibitions.
