A German sculptor, he created monumental figures of mythological heroes, fauns and elvins, as well as monumental fountains and portrait busts.

Toberentz attended the Kunstakademie at Berlin, followed by a two-year apprenticeship at Schilling's Atelier in Dresden.  After several years of study in Italy, he returned to Berlin, changing from an idealistic to a more natural style, creating statues of elves and fauns, and in 1878 a statue of a resting shepherd, now at the National (showing 500 of 966 characters).
