Born in Namur, Belgium on Feb. 14, 1826, T'Scharner arrived in San Francisco aboard the ship Uncas in late 1850 and, while there, did a series of 40 drawings and watercolors of miners, Indians, and scenes of San Francisco. He was active there until 1853 and then returned to his native land.
