Ulysses Dow Tenney (1826-1908), one of the foremost nineteenth century portrait painters of New Hampshire, was born in Hanover and died in Portsmouth. He studied first with his uncle, portrait painter Adna Tenney (1810-1900), then with Roswell T. Smith of Hanover and Francis Alexander, a leading portraitist of Boston. During his career, he taught a number of students himself in addition to painting, by his own account, near (showing 500 of 1935 characters). |
