This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The son of Senator Lyman Trumbull of Illinois, Walter Trumbull accompanied the 1870 survey expedition of Henry Dana Washburn to the area that later became Yellowstone National Park. His depictions, many of them in pencil, included members of the party and geological features. He later published an account of the trip in the "Overland Monthly" in the spring of 1871.
Previous to going to Yellowstone, he had been in Yosemite and in his writings made comparisons between the two places, and predicted that Yellowstone would likely become one of the most popular tourist places in America.
