Born in Schwerin, Germany, he moved as a youngster with his family to Berlin and grew up there during the Weimar Republic. He studied law but transferred to the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1937.
In 1949, he married Ellen Rhret from Philadelphia, whom he had met in Paris before World War II. In 1959, he settled in Philadelphia and taught at the Philadelphia Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy and continued to show his sculpture regularly at the Philadelphia Art Alliance.
