This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A well-established woodcarver on Martha's Vineyard on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, J P Uranker specializes in hand-carved signs. His designs include eagles and folk art motifs. The following biography provided by the artist.

I was born June 22, 1950 in Moon Run, Pennsylvania a small coal mining town located North West of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I attended Montour High and graduated in 1968 and it was during this time I developed my love & skills as an artist.

I received a BA in Art education from Carlow College in 1974. Carlow College has large sculpture of mine on it's second floor of it's library. After college I joined the 2 highly selective art associations in Pittsburgh---Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, & Pittsburgh Society of Artists.

I married Francesca A. Hoffman April 23, 1976. I did a lot of shows during this time period and progressed as an artist. I worked at Carnegie Mellon University from 1968 1991, and I used my art skills to restore the unique art and architecture at the University. My last project was restoring the George Nakashima collection in Warner Hall. Also during this time in 1986 I received a Master's degree from Carnegie Mellon in Business and Public Management.

I combined my business knowledge and my artistic talents and I decided to use both together and settle on Martha's Vineyard with my wife Francesca in 1990. With her help and assistance we have grown to become Martha's Vineyard predominate woodcarver and custom sign maker business.

I help local non profits by donating pieces and work to help them raise the needed money to preserve the service or buildings here on the Island.

Note from the artist dated 6/19/2002:

I am writing to let you know my wife Fran and I will be in Fort Lauderdale, Fl from June 21 - 24. I am being commissioned by the USGC to reproduce the carving on the stern of the United States Coast Guard boat the Barque EAGLE. It's a 295' 1,880 ton steel hull 3 masted vessel. I will be reproducing the quarter board on the stern and restoring the Eagle on the bow of the ship. I need to take measurements and check on removal and then the re installation etc. I will keep you informed about the eagle.

Note from the artist 8/19/2002:

Well It's official,I have been commissioned to do a new quarterboard rope and dolphins for the stern on the Coast Guard Barque Eagle, and to restore the eagle on the bow of the Eagle.

I have include a web page address for the boat in dry dock, and the location on the Eagle on the bow of the Boat and the quarterboard on the stern. I will be required to go to Baltimore MD to supervise the removal of the Eagle and its set up for restoration work, and for the removal of the quarterboard from the stern.

I will be bringing back the quarterboard, rope and dolphins from the ship yard back to my studio too make a new carvings from Mahogany. This will happen in October and I will need to done by January. It's a lot of time but it's a project that will be on the boat as long as it's
in the water.

I will be working off a crane and scaffolding for this project, Fran (my wife) thinks I am crazy; I told her it's not the height that kills you, heights have never seemed to bother me to much.
