Biography from David Dike Fine Art:

Artist and teacher for almost 50 years, Karl Umlauf is a nationally and internationally recognized artist and a Texas Legend.  Karl's artwork is found in over 40 museums and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, N.Y., the Modern Museum of Art, New York City, N.Y. and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX.

While attending the University of Texas, Karl studied under some of the great artists of the time. Among these artists were Everett Spruce, Loren Mozley, William Lester and Kelly Fearing.  Karl received his B.F.A. from the University of Texas, Austin, TX, in 1961 and his M.F.A. from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1963.

New York provided great success and recognition to Karl, something many artists only dream of. Had he chosen to stay in New York he was virtually assured of fame and fortune. However, Karl's idea of fame and fortune was not centered in his own but in helping others reach their goals and ambitions.  So Karl chose to return to his beloved Texas to teach at the university level and pursue his artistic career.  Among the many prestigious positions Karl holds are Professor of Art for 22 years at East Texas State University and presently Artist-in-Residence at Baylor University, a position he has held for 19 years.

Biography from Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden:
Artist and Professor of Art, Karl Umlauf received a BFA from the University of Texas in Austin in 1961 and an MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1963.   He accepted a teaching position at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University at Commerce) in 1967 and taught there until 1989 when he became artist-in-residence at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

The numerous grants he received from East Texas State from 1967-84 and from Baylor University from 1989 to the present have provided the support for his research in personal creative images, concepts, and technical processes.

Throughout his painting career Umlauf's work has reflected the visual energy of the interaction of mechanical, organic, and relief elements. Since his youth Umlauf has been attracted to construction and industrial sites for their mechanical complexity, raw shapes, surfaces and linear energy. This visual appreciation of the industrial environments of steel mills, refineries, salvage yards, and harbors inspires Umlauf's work to this day.
