Artist Statement:
Interestingly, I navigated through a fondness for Old Master paintings and discovered that abstract art was the most satisfying way for me to explore the unique, captivating qualities of oil paint. Though I developed my technique by combining, in a sense, the facture of the Old Masters with those employed by the Abstract Expressionists, I seek to create images that are not easy to reconcile, and one of my inspirations for this resides in the paintings of Jonathan Lasker, for example, though the early, surrealistic kinds of abstract works done by Gorky, Pollock, DeKooning, and others also was a major influence.

I like to think of my art as a balance between technical innovation and thought-provoking imager. One might say that I'm a de constructionist, using both novel and "retro" techniques to re invigorate oil painting by turning many preconceived notions about it upside down.

Review:
"What I find most compelling about Nick Ucci's images is how they call out to you from afar, then invite you in, and ask you to stay awhile, allowing you to peruse a different world, the world of oil paint in its most sensual, expressive permutations. His courage to reinvestigate abstraction in a traditional form has yielded eclectic images that demand attention. Ucci came to abstract painting from a very different angle than most artists who tackle the difficulties of making abstract oil paintings that seem fresh and vibrant, as opposed to the usual fare of colorful Pollock-like images that are, from an artistic perspective, indistinguishable from each other. Ucci learned about the techniques of the Old Masters, using their innovations to rethink Abstract Expressionism. Instead of seeking to create a two-dimensional "art object," Ucci wants to create tension between seeing his works as three-dimensional realities and two-dimensional flows of paint on a flat surface. His aim has been to re invigorate abstract art without resorting to the kinds of non-painterly projects that many abstract artists have found it necessary to undertake" Excerpt from the book, Tergiversation, Cogitation, Transmutation: The Art of Nick Ucci (2002), by Lynn Charles Foster (ISBN 0-9712509-2-8).
