Born in Strasbourg, Jean-Thomas 'Tomi' Ungerer emigrated to the United States in 1956, bringing with him some of his drawings.  Already in 1957, he won a prize for his first illustrated children's book.  In the same year, he came in contact with his later publishing house, the Diogenes Verlag in Zurich.

He worked as a draftsman, painter, illustrator, children's book author and graphic designer.  Mid-1960s, he became known for his satirical cartoon books of the New York hig (showing 500 of 1028 characters).
