| | Born in Belgium on March 3, 1895. Van Opstal studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He came to the U.S. in 1922 following service in WWI. After working in Philadelphia and NYC, he moved to San Francisco. He worked there as a commercial artist and interior decorator until the 1930s when he moved down the peninsula to Palo Alto. During the 1960s he spent two years painting in Spain on Majorca. A gnome-like man of 4'11", he was a highly accomplished painter of landscapes, missions, marines, and still lifes.
