| Born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, she first became interested in painting at the Winsor School in Bostons. She studied with Bernard Keyes and Philip L Hale at the Museum School in Boston and had private study with John Whorf. She graduated in fine arts from Sarah Lawrence College and attended the Art Students League in New York. In the 1930s, she had three exhibitions at the Vose Galleries in Boston, and in 1941 married Robert Vose, Jr, a childhood friend from Brookline.
